I sort of recall that Warhammer 40K Dawn of War was nominally an RTS but tended to be more about small-squad tactics, but I never really played it. I guess I would second World In Conflict as a reasonably good facsimile. Multiplayer, however, is a lot of fun, and most games I've played are set for 40 minutes (though they can end earlier, depending on victory conditions).īut more on-point. and while it's not frantic/clicky/micromanagey- units typically move relatively slowly- you have so many units spread out over such a distance that you do need to have a ton of situational awareness and respond quickly to new threats (precisely because your units are so slow, and line-of-sight can be hard- if you're not careful, they can sneak up on you and your tanks are just toooo sloooww to intercept).Īnd generally (IME) you'll be managing two or three skirmishes at any given time, with an occasional huge push at least at my level of play, you don't do a ton of fiddling with individual units, it's more about which units you brought to the fight.Īnd yeah, single-player is rubbish- the AI is dumb and they compensate by giving the AI more points, so they tend to just be big ol' human wave attacks. While it's far more focused on tactics than resource management and economy, there's just a ton more layers of gameplay than Myth- with WG, you're worrying about things like recon, terrain and roads, having an appropriate air defense network, keeping your vehicles fueled and your artillery ammo'd up.

Yeah, I play a lot of Wargame: Air-Land Battle, and I'd say while it's a ton of fun, it's not very Myth-like.

I miss this one a lot and totally forgot about it! Haven't played since high school. Difficult for me, because I'm terrible with micro, but I loved the story, the setting, the hopeless feeling, and the way the engine worked. I must confess, this was always my favorite way to play the rtses I played (which pretty much boils down to Starcraft 1 and 2, all of the Warcrafts, and a couple of the early C&C games).īut I LOVED Myth 1 and 2.

MYTH II SOULBLIGHTER DORF BALL SERIES

This is why the age of empires series was so popular (and the most frequent feedback from players is that the battle-only maps in the single player were mean, lousy puzzles). Scientific Anus Fact: 99% of RTS players like to turtle, build an invincible force of max units, and then comp stomp. With Myth, you pick your preferred configuration of troops and fight. And I don't understand the popularity of RTS games where you have to mine resources and build stuff. I'm quite surprised no game company has tried to emulate the playing style of the Myth series.
